Happy 47th to me
Today marks my 47th trip around yon celestial ball.

Huntsville Botanical Garden for my cousin’s wedding. Notice the gold sneakers.
And it’s kind of amazing to me, because when I was a little girl, I always pictured age as increments on one of those sewing tape measures. When I was eight years old looking all the way down to 40, it seemed so far away. It felt like it would take forever to get there.
And the other thing is that, as a child in the 1980s, 40 looked very different from the way it looks today. Forty was middle-aged. Forty was over the hill. I remember people having 40th birthday parties with tombstone motifs on the cakes, because that was genuinely how people joked about getting older.
Now I’m 47. And one of the strangest things for me to realize is that I’m almost the same age my mother was when I was in my first year of law school. The idea that, if my life had gone differently, I could have a child in law school right now is absolutely bananas to me.
But times have changed. Technology has changed. Healthcare has progressed. The way we think about aging has changed. Forty isn’t the beginning of your life being over. It’s just a transition into another part of it. And rather than slowing down, I find myself taking on new challenges and thinking seriously about what I want the next 20 years to look like. That includes my career. What do I want work to look like over the next 20 years? It includes my business. It includes the things I still want to learn, build and create.
And honestly, maybe I should be thinking even farther ahead than 20 years, because 70 doesn’t look the way it used to either. Both of my parents are in their 70s, and they are still active. They have interests. They travel. They have plans. When I was younger, 70 year old people weren’t like that.
So I’ve realized that 40 isn’t the beginning of the end. It’s just the beginning of another chapter. And here I am at 47, in my third year of business and planning for my fourth season. I’m changing things up. I’m getting ready to create production fields at home so that when I finally get that farm I’ve been talking about, I’ll already have stock to take with me. So yeah. Forty-seven is a lot busier than I thought it was going to be.
Happy 47 to me.
And here’s to the next 47 years.
